The blue-throated triggerfish ( Xanthichthys auromarginatus ) lives in the western Indo-Pacific from East Africa to Hawaii , north to the Ryūkyū Islands and south to the Cocos Islands and New Caledonia . It lives in small groups in the upper areas of high currents, steep outer reefs with a rich invertebrate fauna, mostly above a depth of 20 meters. Bluethroat triggerfish, like all members of the genus Xanthichthys , feed on zooplankton , especially copepods .

The blue-throated triggerfish has an oval, greenish, bluish or gray body. The males have a bright blue throat, which the German name refers to, as well as dorsal , anal and caudal fins outlined in yellow , which is indicated by the species epithet of the scientific name. The fish are 20 to 22 centimeters long.
