Bloet (noble family)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Bloet family was a noble Anglo-Norman family who owned extensive estates in south-west England and the Welsh Marches between about 1080 and 1300 . The first member of the family is mentioned in the Domesday Book Ralph I Bloet with extensive possessions. He owned six estates in the Welsh rule of Striguil , making him and his heirs the most important vassals of that rule of the Welsh Marches. Through these extensive possessions, the family was far above other vassals from the knighthood . The family property was not split up among Ralph's descendants, allowing the family to maintain their position in South East Wales for over 150 years. It wasn't until the 13th century that Silchester , Hampshire, became the family's new headquarters.

Ralph II Bloet († around 1157) was probably a son or grandson of Ralph I. Of his younger sons, Walter Bloet founded the branch line of Raglan Castle and Sir Robert Bloet the branch line of Daglingworth in Gloucestershire . Both branch lines existed until the 14th century. Raglan Castle acquired William ap Thomas when, after 1406 , he married Elizabeth , heir to the Bloet family. The main heir to Ralph II Bloet was his son Sir Ralph III Bloet , who married Nest , a temporary lover of King Henry II . Nest had already given the king an illegitimate son, Morgan . Probably through this relationship, several of Ralph III Bloet's sons served in the household of King John Ohneland , a half-brother of Morgan. Ralph III Bloet's heir was his son of the same name, Ralph IV Bloet . His son and heir William Bloet took over several offices in South West England. Around 1300 his legacy, John Bloet, is mentioned as the last member of the main line of the family.
