Blood Hound ( Japanese 夜 型 愛人 専 門店 - ブ ラ ッ ド ハ ウ ン ド - , Yorugata Aijin Senmonten - Buraddo Haundo ) is a manga series by the Japanese artist Kaori Yuki , who became known through comics such as Angel Sanctuary and God Child . The approximately 140-page manga is aimed at young girls, so it can be assigned to the Shōjo genre.

action

The manga itself is divided into three short stories that build on each other. In the first story, various girls disappear without a trace, including Shiho, the friend of high school student Rion Kanou. Rion, the daughter of a member of parliament, ran away from home as a child and wanted to kill herself because she felt unloved. But in the process she met a vampire who bit her, but saved her life. Since then she has had a scar in the shape of XXX on her neck.

After one of the missing girls is found dead and without blood, the media speak of the "vampire murder case". A card Rion got from Shiho shortly before she disappeared leads her to the host club "Hospital", where she suspects vampires. Although the members of the club want to kick her out because she is still a minor, after Rion smashed a bottle of Dom Pérignon worth 700 euros, she was allowed to stay to work off the damage. Rion thinks the mysterious Suou is the culprit. But this ultimately turns out to be someone completely unexpected and Rion is in great danger.

In the second story, Rion comes across her classmate Kinuka Amagi, who turns out to be a witch and wants Rion's blood, as she hopes to be able to restore her body, which has been disfigured by surgical scars. Kinuka's servants include Suou, who now looks significantly younger.

In the third story, while cleaning, Rion destroys a bottle in which a demon who is responsible for sex reassignment is trapped. With a few splashes from the bottle, Rion turns into a boy. She can only become a girl again if she kisses the woman who speaks to her first. And that woman is Kinuka Amagi.

Publications

The three chapters of Blood Hound appeared in Japan from January 2003 to September 2004 irregularly in the manga magazines Hana to Yume and Bessatsu Hana to Yume ( Betsuhana ). The Hakusensha publishing house also published these three individual chapters as an anthology. In January 2005, Yuki published a fourth chapter in the Betsuhana . Since the manga has an open ending, a sequel is quite possible.

The manga also appeared in France and Germany. Carlsen Comics published the volume in April 2006 in German.

The story Blood Hound Special , a spin-off, is slated for release in September 2008 by Carlsen Comics in the Chibi-Manga series. This makes it the first manga that appears from a Japanese manga magazine directly outside of Japan.

backgrounds

The manga is based on a live series broadcast in Japan with the title Vampire Callboy - Night Lovers Special Shop (which is also reflected in the original title). The main roles were played by Minako Komukai (Rion) and Satoshi Matsuda (Suou).

The name Suou refers to the blood-red color of the East Indian sappan wood .

Rion's mark on the neck in the form XXX stands for the 30 pieces of silver that Judas received as a reward for his betrayal of Jesus . Therefore the vampires in this manga see themselves as "children of Judah".

When drawing the last short story, Kaori Yuki was about to give birth, which is why the story turned out to be relatively short.

Dorama

Based on the manga, the 12-part drama Vampire Host ( ヴ ァ ン パ イ ア ホ ス ト , Vampaia Hosuto ) was broadcast on TV Tokyo from April 4 to June 27, 2004 .
