Angel Sanctuary ( Japanese 天使 禁 猟 区 , Tenshi Kinryōku ) is a completed manga series by the Japanese artist Kaori Yuki , which was also filmed as an anime . Figures and scenes come from Christian , Jewish and above all Kabbalistic mythology , the story takes up corresponding elements such as the “seven levels of heaven and hell” or “God's withdrawal”.

action

The young Setsuna Mudō ( 無 道 刹那 Mudō Setsuna ) is in love with his own sister Sara ( 無 道 紗羅 Mudō Sara ). As if this incestuous problem wasn't big enough, he also has to learn that he has the soul of the fallen and condemned female angel Alexiel ( ア レ ク シ エ ル Arekushieru ) within him. Therefore, he soon meets Alexiel's brother Rosiel , who was sealed with a spell in the earth by Alexiel in the last fight between angels and demons. Meanwhile, his loyal follower Katan has freed him from his exile and he seeks revenge. Setsuna slips into the center of a battle between heaven and hell in which many of his friends and acquaintances perish, such as his sister Sara, who sacrifices herself for him. The desire to bring Sara back to life at all costs leads Setsuna to Hades , where he meets the guardian of the hell gate Uriel , who is also one of the four archangels . While he is there, his real body dies and he first comes to life in Alexiel's body, which has been in hell since it was condemned by God . There he not only meets some of the seven satans, who represent the seven deadly sins , but also Lucifer personally. After he has returned from there and also got his old body back, he goes to heaven , a place just as depraved as hell, where he meets the remaining three archangels Raphael , Michael and Jibril , who each symbolize a kind of angel and themselves have quarreled with each other. But even there he does not stop, but travels up through the bowls of heaven to the Etemenanki , the tower of God, where he personally meets the Creator .

The world of Angel Sanctuary continues to be populated by heavenly beings like Metatron , Sevothtarte , demons like Belial and mythical creatures like Ghouls and the dragon Nidvhegg .

reception

In 2004 Angel Sanctuary received the Sondermann Audience Award at the Frankfurt Book Fair in the “Manga / Manhwa international” category.

The specialist magazine Animania praises the fact that, despite the changes in the plot, the manga's dramaturgical and atmospheric density was roughly retained when it was implemented as an anime. The drawings and animations are of the highest quality, the music creates the right atmosphere. The German dubbing is also appropriate and credible.
