Kremsier flower garden

The flower garden Kroměříž (Czech. Květná zahrada Kroměříž ) is the smaller of the two former archiepiscopal gardens in the Czech town of Kroměříž . It is located west of the old town and, together with the Kremsier Castle (formerly the Archbishop's Palace) and the larger Kroměříž Castle Park, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998 .

history

During the reconstruction of the city after the destruction of the Thirty Years' War in the years 1665 to 1675 under Bishop Karl II. Von Liechtenstein-Kastelkorn (1664–1695) , the flower garden was laid out on barren and swampy ground behind the walls of the city as a late Renaissance garden (cf. Hortus Eystettensis in Eichstätt). The original name of the garden was Libosad , today it is an early baroque park with an area of 485 × 300 m, in which Italian and Dutch influences were combined. The garden was designed by the Italian architects Filiberto Lucchese and Giovanni Pietro Tencalla .

description

rotunda

In the middle of the garden is an octagonal rotunda with rich stucco and fresco decorations . Inside the building are rich stucco work by the Italian masters Quirinus Castella and Carlo Borsy, the frescoes are by Giovanni Pietro Tencalla . The rotunda is considered to be one of the most valuable buildings in garden history.

In the rotunda a Foucault pendulum was attached to a rope 25 m long. The idea for this came from the grammar school teacher Dr. František Nábělek (1852–1915, not to be confused with the botanist of the same name). The entire garden is symmetrical and fenced. It is richly decorated with statues, fountains and triangular hedges.

Entrance house

A new entrance area with cash register, courtyard and greenhouses was built in the classicistic style between 1840 and 1845 . The courtyard is flanked by two palm houses and the entrance building and is open to the garden. Tropical and subtropical plants that are well worth seeing are shown there. The entrance portal has a triangular tympanum with a gilded archbishop's coat of arms.

Colonnade in the Kremsier flower garden

Colonnades

On one side of the garden is a 244 m long colonnade (gallery of 46 open arcades), this was originally the main entrance to the garden. The gallery is adorned with 44 statues of ancient deities and with statues and busts of historical and mystical personalities, e.g. B. Aktäon , Asklepios , Atalante , Erato , Euterpe , Marsyas , Melpomene , Minerva , Niobe and Urania . In the garden there is also the Lion Fountain and the Triton Fountain, as well as a square and a circular labyrinth.

Reconstruction of the garden

The basic structure of the garden has been retained in the various renovations that have taken place since the beginning of the 19th century. The garden in Kroměříž is now a baroque garden in the French style, which is rarely found in such good condition in the Czech Republic. More than 300 million crowns were made available from the European regional fund for the fundamental redesign of the garden, which began in the 1990s. This enabled the garden to be restored to its original form. This work was completed in 2014. It is planned to set up a national center for garden culture.
