Julius Kaufmann

Julius Kaufmann (born April 10, 1895 in Altkirch , Upper Alsace ; † December 21, 1968 in Klein-Bieberau ) was a German painter and graphic artist of the 20th century.

Life

Julius Kaufmann was trained at the School of Applied Arts in Strasbourg with Georg Daubner and Carl Jordan. Afterwards, Kaufmann studied in Kassel and Karlsruhe as well as at the Colarossi Academy in Paris .

In 1918 he married the painter Elsa Pfister-Kaufmann . In 1920 he moved to Darmstadt with his wife . In 1921 Julius Kaufmann participated in the annual exhibition of the “Darmstädter Gruppe” and in the International Exhibition of Modern Art in Geneva . He worked for the expressionist magazine " Die Aktion ".

In an air raid on Darmstadt in 1944, the artist's studio and a large part of his works were destroyed.

Until his death in 1968 Julius Kaufmann lived secluded in Webern / Odenwald .
