The Purple Bock ( Purpuricenus kaehleri ) is a beetle from the family of longhorn beetles (Cerambycidae). The species is unmistakable in Central Europe because of its habitus and the very striking drawing.

features

The beetles of the nominate form have a body length of 9 to 20 millimeters. The antennae are shorter in the female and longer than the body in the male. The pronotum is almost bare on the top and has a pointed thorn on each side. The elytra are relatively wide. The antennae, head, pronotum and legs are black. The red wing covers show in the middle a large, elongated black spot that does not extend to the wing cover tips.

Occurrence and way of life

The warmth-loving species occurs in Central Europe only in heat-favored areas. In Germany, the species occurs only locally and not continuously in wine-growing areas and steppe heaths in the Rheinthal and in the area of the Elbe and Oder . The subspecies Purpuricenus kaehleri menetriesi is distributed from northern Iran via Azerbaijan to Georgia , Dagestan and the Krasnodar region. In Turkey , the species is native to the provinces of Kırklareli and Istanbul .

The beetles can be observed on the breeding trees or on blossoms from May to August. The larvae develop in two to three centimeters thick, dead branches of various deciduous trees.
