( Panzer , 1793)

The blood-necked snap beetle ( Ischnodes sanguinicollis ) is a beetle from the family of the click beetles (Elateridae).

features

The length of the blood neck snap beetle is eight to ten millimeters. The beetles are crepuscular and appear from May to July.

The larvae develop just like those of the violet-necked snapback beetle ( Limoniscus violaceus ) in sludge caves with ground contact with old deciduous trees, but are more tolerant of waterlogging and lack of oxygen than those of the violet-necked snapback beetle. The larvae overwinter in the tree.

distribution

The occurrence is linked to old trees. The species occurs in the Palearctic , from Sweden to Japan , in the Ukraine for example on the west side of the Carpathian Mountains , in England in the south-east.

Hazard and protection

The International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) assesses the stock as endangered ("vulnerable"), since the occurrence is bound to decaying heartwood, which is allowed less frequently as the forest is used more intensively.
