Bożena Nowakowska

Bożena Nowakowska (married Świerczyńska; born March 21, 1955 in Warsaw ) is a former Polish hurdler who specialized in the 100-meter distance .

Nowakowska graduated from the Sports Academy in Poznan and started for the Warszawianka Club in Warsaw.

At the European Athletics Championships in 1974 she reached the semi-finals. The following year she won silver at the Universiade in Rome in 1975 with a time of 13.34 s and was listed in fifth place in the 100-meter hurdles ranking by Track & Field News magazine .

In 1976 she won bronze over 60 m hurdles at the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Munich . At the Olympic Games in Montreal she won her preliminary run ahead of Annelie Ehrhardt , who also reached the next round in third place. In the semifinals, Nowakowska finished fifth and only had to admit defeat to the Israeli Esther Roth (13.04s) after a photo shot decision, so that she just missed the final.

At the European Athletics Cup in Helsinki in 1977 she was third.

In 1977 she became Polish champion over 100 m hurdles.

Bożena Nowakowska is married to the sprinter Andrzej Świerczyński and lives in Warsaw.
