Robert "Bob" Clayton Lanier (born March 10, 1925 , † December 20, 2014 in Houston , Texas ) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ). From 1992 to 1997 he was the mayor of Houston.

Life

Lanier grew up in Baytown , Texas. During World War II he served in the United States Navy . He later studied at the University of New Mexico and the University of Texas . He then practiced as a Houston attorney with the Baker & Botts law firm . After working there for more than a decade, he switched to banking and then eventually became a property developer .

In 1991 he was elected mayor of Houston, replacing the previous incumbent Kathryn J. Whitmire . He was re-elected twice and did not run again in 1997 due to a term limit. As mayor, he was best remembered for his efforts to revitalize downtown Houston. Before he was elected mayor, he was chairman of the Texas Highway Commission .

In 1998 the Houston City Council named the Bob Lanier Public Works Building after him.

Lanier was married a total of three times. He had five sons and three daughters.
