Robert William Henry "Bob" Scott (born February 6, 1921 in Wellington , New Zealand , † November 16, 2012 in Whangamata ) was a New Zealand national rugby union player on the position of goalkeeper and is considered one of the best rugby players in the history of this Sports.

Scott went to school in Kapuni, Tangarakau, Ohura and the Auckland borough of Ponsonby. At the beginning of his rugby career, he first played rugby league for the club Ponsonby United RLFC. It was only when he was drafted into the army in 1941 that he switched to rugby union. In the army he first played for the Motor Transport Pool team . With her he was able to win the Auckland Regionalliga and thus the prestigious Gallaher Shield .

During the Second World War he served since 1942 as a truck driver in a transport unit for ammunition of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force (NZEF) in North Africa and Italy . New Zealand division companies formed rugby teams there as well and played in a tournament called the Freyberg Cup - named after the British General Bernard Freyberg , who commanded the New Zealanders. Scott was on the Ammunition Company team that lost the Freybery Cup final in 1944. After the war he was nominated for the "Kiwis". This New Zealand Army team toured successfully in 1945/46 as part of the Victory internationals by the UK , France , Germany and New Zealand. He played in 19 of the 38 tour games.

Back in New Zealand he played now for the club Ponsonby RFC in the regional championship of Auckland and made his debut on September 14, 1946 for the New Zealand national team (All Blacks) in their first game after the war. The opponent was neighbor Australia (Wallabies) , who traveled to New Zealand for two games for the Bledisloe Cup . The All Blacks won both games. In his national team career, he quickly developed a reputation as an excellent kicker on the males.

In 1947 Scott toured Australia with the New Zealanders. Again they won both internationals against the Wallabies.

After that, the All Blacks did not run again until two years later. During the 1949 tour in South Africa, Scott was again part of the regular formation. After this long break, New Zealand lost all four international matches against South Africa in the Cape.

The following year the British Lions toured New Zealand for the first time since 1930. The All Blacks were able to win this test series with three wins and one draw. Again Bob Scott played in all games and thus made a great contribution to this success.

At the end of the 1951 season he announced his retirement from rugby, but continued to play provincial rugby for the Auckland RFU and was appointed to the national team for their successful 1953/54 European tour in Great Britain, Ireland and France at the end of 1953 . He immediately made it back into the regular lineup.

After this tour, he moved to Petone RC in 1954, before his career finally ended a short time later. As a co-author, he published two books with Terry McLean about his life on and off the rugby field. They had the title "Bob Scott on Rugby" (1955) and "The Bob Scott Story" (1956).
