James Robert "Bobby" Combe (born January 29, 1924 in Leith , Edinburgh ; † January 19, 1991 ) was a Scottish football player who acted at the beginning of his active career in attack and later in midfield .

Life

Club player

After training at his hometown club Inveresk Athletic , the then 17-year-old Bobby Combe moved to the nearby capital club Hibernian Edinburgh for the 1941/42 season , where he spent almost his entire adult career.

At the Hibs Combe first played in the storm row until a few years later Bobby Johnstone, who played in the same position, had contested his previous position and Combe was henceforth promoted to midfield.

Combe was a regular player for what is arguably the best team in the club's history, the Hibs, who were able to win three of their four championship titles between 1947/48 and 1951/52 (the first title win dates from the 1902/03 season). In addition, the Hibs narrowly missed two more championship titles in this era, when they were runner-up behind the Glasgow Rangers in 1949/50 with only one point behind and in 1952/53 only because of the poorer goal quotient (1.82 versus 2.05) .

National player

In 1948 Combe played a total of three international appearances for the Scottish national team and scored his only international goal in the 2-0 win over Belgium on April 28, 1948.

Combe was also part of the Scottish World Cup squad in 1954 . However, the team only traveled to the World Cup with 13 players and Combe was among the other nine who stayed at home, so he was consequently without a World Cup appearance.

Trainer

After the (provisional) end of his active career, Combe was entrusted with the coaching post of his long-term club in 1957. He then worked in the 1959/60 season as a player-coach for FC Dumbarton .
