The Bodengucker ( Selene vomer ), also known as horse head , horse head fish or Bodengucker mackerel , is a fish from the family of jacks (Carangidae). It occurs in the tropical and subtropical western Atlantic from the coast of the New England states , possibly even off Nova Scotia , over the Caribbean , Bermuda and the Gulf of Mexico to Uruguay . It is rare around the Greater Antilles .

features

The bottom gazer has a very high-backed, laterally strongly flattened body and thus resembles the thread mackerel . Characteristic is its large head, with the very steep head profile and the mouth standing far below. The eye is equidistant from the mouth and the upper edge of the head. The first rays of the dorsal and anal fin are greatly elongated, but not thread-like, but still connected with the fin membrane. The pelvic fins are very small. Ground gazers are usually 35 cm long, with a maximum length of 47 cm. The color is silvery, guanine dyes in the skin reflect the light, so that all sorts of iridescent reflections arise when light falls from the side .

Way of life

The bottom gazer lives in shallow water at depths of one to 60 meters above hard or sandy soils. Young fish also go into estuaries. It lives in schools, small groups or in pairs, and feeds on small crabs, shrimp, small fish and worms.
