The floor layer deals with the installation and repair of various types of flooring . The activity is a recognized training occupation, which is mainly used in the construction ancillary trade .

job profile

With the advent of large floor coverings in the 20th century, there was also a demand for workers who could lay the new materials. Specialized companies soon formed, the employees of which were mostly trained painters or upholsterers , for example , but many unskilled workers were also employed.

The occupation of flooring was only included as a craft-like trade in Annex B of the Crafts Code in 1965 , but it was not recognized as a training occupation . In 1982 the Federal Ministry of Education and Science succeeded in enforcing an ordinance on the examination of the recognized qualification “Certified Floor Layers”. Years of efforts to establish the flooring trade as a full craft failed due to the resistance of the trades involved . Only in the course of a reorganization of the vocational training in the parquet laying trade, which traditionally works closely with the flooring trade, could flooring be created as a training occupation in the same process in 2002.

Since then it has been possible to do an apprenticeship as a floor layer in flooring companies or in the flooring trade. The prerequisite for the training of floor layers is, on the one hand, that the company is technically capable of carrying out floor layer training on the basis of the training framework plan. The competent body, i.e. the Chamber of Crafts or the Chamber of Commerce and Industry , decides on the professional suitability , depending on where the training company is a member. On the other hand, there must be a trainer in the company who can prove his qualification for training with a trainer aptitude test.

Floor covering work also belongs to the professional profile of the full trades screed layers, painters, parquet layers and interior decorators . Accordingly, the above-mentioned full trades can train not only in their craft, but also in the flooring trade, if the above-mentioned requirements are met.

Scope of training in the flooring trade

Floor layers design and lay elastic and textile tile and membrane coverings, prefabricated parquet and laminate floors and repair these floors. They create substrates and check found substrates. They also apply surface treatments to floors with a cork surface. You connect all floors to adjacent components, creating a ready-to-use floor.

Training Germany

The training lasts three years and takes place in the dual system instead, that in this context, the practical activities and work processes (skills) are taught in the company and in the vocational school , the theoretical content (knowledge) and z. Sometimes skills are also taught.

Training Austria

In Austria, flooring is an apprenticeship with a three-year apprenticeship period. The prerequisite for the admission of an apprentice is the completion of a secondary school or polytechnic school. In the dual system, apprentices are mostly trained by flooring companies, flooring dealers or furniture stores. After completing the apprenticeship and at the age of 18, the master craftsman examination can be taken.
