Upholsterer (from French tapissier ) is the job title for a craftsman who, among other things, is responsible for covering walls with wallpaper .

In Germany, this activity usually requires training in the interior decorating trade or in the painting and varnishing trade .

In Austria, the training ordinance of the Ministry of Economic Affairs stipulates a three-year dual training course for the apprenticeship “wallpaperer and decorator” . Unlike in Germany, the trade is regulated. This meant that appropriate training was required to practice the profession and that a master craftsman's examination was required to run a wallpapering business.

The field of activity of the upholsterer has been very extensive since the beginning of the profession and includes, among other things, the application of wall and ceiling coverings almost all tasks of draping , furnishing and decorating rooms, halls and other rooms, including the production of window and bed curtains, screens , Fireplace screens , canopies and canopies , upholstery , mattresses and the like. The profession corresponded roughly to that of today's interior decorator (see there). The office of courtyard paper worker was a purchasable charge in royal and princely houses .

Upholsterer and decorator - Austria

Since 1998 the official name of the profession in Austria has been "upholsterer and decorator". Until a few years ago still called "upholsterer and bedding manufacturer", the name change reflected the change in the job description, as the production of bedding (here also, and above all, horsehair mattresses) became increasingly less important. For comparison: in 1952 the following trades (and trades) were still managed separately: "upholsterers and bedding manufacturers", "vehicle upholsterers", "decorators", "self-rolling and blinds manufacturers".

Wallpapering as a regulated trade

Legal professional representation

The Austrian federal guild of upholsterers, decorators and saddlers is the legal representative of the interests of the independent commercial enterprises in Austria. It is an independent specialist organization within the Austrian Chamber of Commerce with its own area of activity and represents members from the upholstery and decorators and saddlers industry.

History of the Viennese upholsterers

In general, the history of upholsterers is also linked to the historical development of materials and techniques.

1625 - the first documented mention of the upholsterer in Vienna under the name "ceiling maker".

1627 - Ferdinand II confirms the upholstery trade.

1696 - Leopold I grants a patent for the bourgeois upholsterer.

1698 - in Christoph Weigel's status book , the upholstery trade is assigned to the bag makers because they "The bag makers not only cover all sorts of armchairs and chairs with leather / cloth / velvet / gold-embroidered brocard / but also coat them with brass / silver / and gilded nails / also precious borders and fringes. They also sometimes paper in the absence of the proper upholsterers / grand gentlemen audience halls and other splendid rooms / with all sorts of gilded leather and very art / rich / knitted highly valued wallpaper "

1725 - Master upholsterer Sigismund Johann Hipp, founds the upholsterers' shop and creates the first "Maisterbuch their bourgeois wallpapering"

1738 - Upholsterer statutes are issued and the guild is awarded the "Great Island of the Bourgeois Tappeziren". With this, there is, most likely, a strict demarcation of the craft

1773 -. August 28th. Maria Theresa issues a new handicraft regulation for upholsterers, which defines the organization of the guild as well as the masterpieces. The following masterpieces were required: 1 caprioloet armchair with armrests, 1 round canapé , 1 screen ( paravant ) made of paper on canvas, and 1 French-style pavilion bed . The apprenticeship lasts between 4 and 5 years.
