The Bodenseestadion is a football stadium with an athletics facility in the Petershausen-Ost district of the Baden-Württemberg city of Konstanz on Lake Constance .

history

The stadium in Konstanz, which at the time only had 35,000 inhabitants, was built in 1935 with a capacity of 30,000 for three million marks. It was inaugurated on October 20, 1935 with a game under pouring rain between the German champions FC Schalke 04 and the Swiss champions and cup winners Lausanne-Sports , which the Gelsenkirchen team won 4-1.

From 1991 to 1992 the sports facility was renovated. It has an athletics facility with an eight-lane type A track. It therefore complies with the DLV statutes . The lawn playing field measures 105 × 68 m. It has a total of 25,000 seats, 1,200 of which are covered and 800 uncovered seats on the main stand.

From 1985 to 2016, the Rock am See music festival took place in the stadium on the first weekend in September and the last weekend in August , with 25,000 spectators expected each time. Other open-air concerts also took place in the stadium, so in 2005 there was a concert with Dieter Thomas Kuhn  & band one day after Rock am See .

The aging stadium is in a ramshackle condition and needs extensive renovation. At the moment, regional league games are not even allowed to be played, as there are neither floodlights nor enough seats or changing rooms. Furthermore, there is no scoreboard , the concrete in the stands is crumbling and some of the stands are closed for safety reasons. There are only five women's and five men's toilets in the stadium. The leaky roof on the main stand is overgrown with moss and is considered unstable. The city's sports department prohibits the groundskeeper from entering the roof for cleaning. The plastic of the seat shells has become brittle over the years and deforms even when pressed with the hands. The track surface is worn and often patched. Just to maintain school and recreational sport in the next five years (until 2021) would have to be invested 200,000 euros. There have been discussions about the future of the Lake Constance stadium since around 2005. There are plans to redesign the system and the surrounding areas in the drawer and are waiting to be implemented.
