The Eastern Province Rugby Union Stadium , usually referred to as EPRU Stadium for short , is a stadium in the South African city of Port Elizabeth . 33,852 spectators can be found in the stands. The stadium was originally named after Boet Erasmus, a former mayor of Port Elizabeth. In September 1968 the Boet Erasmus Stadium was completely destroyed by a flood.
In July 2010 the stadium was closed, the games of the Eastern Province Rugby Union will now take place in the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium . The Eastern Province Kings played their last game against the Blue Bulls on July 3, 2010.
Until the closure, mostly rugby union games took place, but it was also used for soccer matches. Even though it is officially closed today, senior teams and amateur clubs play games in the EPRU Stadium; it is also sometimes used for club rugby.
