The SuperSport Rugby Challenge , until 2015 Vodacom Cup , is an annually (except 2016) tournament in rugby . It takes place between April and July (until 2016 between February and May) in South Africa and is the most important rugby competition in the country after the Currie Cup and Super Rugby . It was originally planned as a development tournament for the Super 14 and still fulfills this task today. The competition was named after the sponsor Vodacom until 2015 and has been named after the new sponsor SuperSport , a South African television station, since 2017 . The competition has been held in two regional leagues since 2005 (2005 Section X and Y, since 2007 North and South).
Since 2010, additional, foreign teams have been taking part. It concerns the Welwitschia , the national team from Namibia and temporarily the Pampas XV , a team from Argentina . In 2014, the national team of Kenya also took part under the name Simba XV , and in 2019 the Zimbabwe Academy was a selection team from Zimbabwe .
All games with the exception of the Welwitschias home games take place in South Africa.
