Bok Geo-il (born March 20, 1946 in Asan , Ch'ungch'ŏngnam-do ) is a South Korean writer and poet .

Life

Bok Geo-il was born on March 20, 1946 in Asan , South Ch'ungch'ŏng Province . He graduated from Seoul National University's business school and worked in a variety of professions in banking, manufacturing, and commerce until he made his debut in 1987 with the novel In Search of the Epitaph (비명 (碑銘) 을 찾아서). In the same year his poems were suggested for publication in a magazine, and the following year he published his first collection of poems, The Autumn of Ojangwŏn (오장원 (五丈 原) 의 가을). Bok is a very interesting and multifaceted writer who experiments with using science fiction to investigate the influence of scientific innovations and technological developments on human life.

His work In Kijich'on at Camp Seneca (캠프 세네카 의 기지촌) is a novel about Kijich'on, the red light district around the US military base in Korea. Bok reduces political or ideological prejudices in order to portray the conflict between local and foreign cultures in the most realistic way possible by looking at them through the eyes of an innocent boy. Since 1994 he has concentrated more on literary criticism and essays. His theory of the universalization of English, as set out in his National Language in the Age of International Language (국제어 시대 의 민족어), was a highly controversial subject at the time.
