Boldewin von Marenholtz (also Balduin Marenholtz ; † December 11, 1532 in Lüneburg ) was a German Roman Catholic theologian and last Catholic abbot of the St. Michaelis Monastery in Lüneburg.

Life

Marenholtz came from a noble family from Lüneburg and made his profession on April 29, 1492 in the Benedictine monastery of St. Michaelis . He then went to Italy to study theology and possibly also law . After his return he was elected 39th abbot of the monastery in 1505 . The election was confirmed by the Bishop of Verden Christoph von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel on December 8, 1505. His Infulierung however, only took place in 1506. Marenholtz advocated the establishment of a regional court in Uelzen one whose first president he became the 1506th In this position brokered contracts between secular lords and for his monastery.

Marenholtz's tenure fell during the Reformation . After he successfully defended himself at first, he had to employ two first Protestant preachers at his church of St. Michaelis in 1528 . In 1530 the city of Lüneburg forbade its citizens to attend Catholic services. He also came into conflict with the reformer Stephan Kempe . During this time, the construction of a water pipe for the city and the monastery, which was completed in 1530 as the abbot water art , also fell.

Marenholtz was able to obtain general privilege for his abbey and the nunnery from Emperor Charles V. However, the Reformation was unstoppable. The last Catholic mass was celebrated in St. Michaelis on Michaelmas Day 1532. During this time only two members of the monastery were Catholic. On December 9, 1532, the prior of the Herbord von Holle monastery , who would later become his Protestant successor, as well as the majority of the capitulars, took the Lord's Supper through the Protestant Andreas Garding in both forms. Marenholtz died of a stroke just two days later .
