Bolgatanga

Bolgatanga is the capital of the Upper East Region in Ghana and the seat of the Bolgatanga Municipal District . It is the last major city before the northern border with Burkina Faso .
Bolgatanga grew very rapidly in the past. At the beginning of the 1960s only 5,500 people lived here, in 1970 there were already 18,900 and in 2010 the city had 65,549 inhabitants.
Bolga, as the Ghanaians also call it, has a good infrastructure, many schools, the Bolgatanga Polytechnic University of Applied Sciences , hospitals and other public facilities. Until a few years ago, Bolgatanga was still supplied with electricity from a diesel power station. The city has recently been directly connected to the Akosombo Dam hydroelectric power station .
Back in 1998, an exhibition on the force as a very traditional was the Regional Museum ethnic group of Lobi furnished. The aim of this exhibition is to dispel prejudices about traditional ways of life. The nearby House of Culture is home to an extensive exhibition on craftsmanship in northern Ghana. The Frafra , who have achieved national importance through their leather and basket art, are also based in Bolgatanga .
Bolgatanga has a number of scenic and cultural attractions in the vicinity. The Singing Hills of Tongo are now very well known. Through the rock formations of these hills, the Harmattan blows very strongly , especially in the dry season, creating a variety of whistling tones, which have already contributed to some traditional legends. The area around Bolgatanga is also known for its clay farmsteads painted with natural colors.
The Catholic church in the city, to Roman Catholic Diocese of Navrongo-Bolgatanga belongs, has a partnership with the parish of St. John in Bottrop.
