Career
societies
Atanga was born in Bolgatanga , a city in the far north of Ghana , just a few kilometers from the border with the northern neighboring country of Burkina Faso . At the age of nine he joined a small local club and received an offer from the Red Bull Academy Ghana for the first time at the age of twelve , which was looking for talent across the country and had become aware of Atanga. At that time, however, he still felt too young to take this step and only switched to the academy located in the south of the country at the age of 14.
After the academy there closed, which soon became part of the West African Football Academy, he came to Salzburg at the age of 17, but as a U18 player and non-EU foreigner was not allowed to join the Austrian Football Association for league operations be registered. Until he was 18, he was only able to play test matches and youth tournaments, where he convinced those in charge and was accepted into the Bundesliga squad of FC Red Bull Salzburg shortly after his 18th birthday .
At first he was only used for the Salzburg training team , FC Liefering , in the second-rate first division , for which he played in the first league game after the winter break on February 27 in a 4-2 away win against SC Austria Lustenau scored the opening goal to 2-1 in the 37th minute. This was followed by another 12 point games for Liefering by the summer and in the final table a second place behind the Bundesliga promoted SV Mattersburg . In the 2015/16 season Atanga made his first Bundesliga appearances for Salzburg, but still mostly played for FC Liefering.
For the 2016/17 season Atanga was awarded to the second division club 1. FC Heidenheim in Germany. There he played a total of five competitive appearances in August and September, one of which was in the starting line-up. From September, however, he was only considered in two test matches by coach Frank Schmidt , so that the loan contract, which was actually still running until the end of the season, was terminated prematurely and Atanga returned to Salzburg during the winter break .
In January 2017 it was awarded to league competitor SV Mattersburg. After initially returning to Salzburg for half a year, he switched again on loan to SKN St. Pölten in January 2018 .
For the 2018/19 season he was awarded a second time to Germany, this time to the second division club SpVgg Greuther Fürth .
For the 2019/20 season he moved to the German second division team Holstein Kiel , with whom he received a contract that ran until June 30, 2022.
National team
In 2015 Atanga played five appearances for the Ghanaian U20 national team , but none of them over the full season. After his debut in a preparatory game against Portugal , he was in the Ghana's squad for the U20 World Cup in New Zealand. The team played in the preliminary round against Austria , Argentina and Panama and became group winners, followed by a 3-0 defeat against Mali in the round of 16 . Atanga was used in all four games, but was substituted against Austria at halftime and substituted in at the other games.
