Career

The son of soccer player Ralf Hauptmann and grandson of Reinhard Hauptmann began his career at DJK Viktoria Frechen. From 2001 to 2008 he played for SC Borea Dresden and then moved to Dynamo Dresden, where his father, who had already played there as a youth and in the Bundesliga , was in charge of the youth academy. Captain went through various youth teams at Dynamo Dresden and made his debut in the 2014/15 season in the NOFV-Oberliga Süd for the second team of the club.

At the beginning of the 2015/16 season , Hauptmann joined Dynamo Dresden's third division team. He made his competitive debut for them on April 23, 2016 in a 4-0 home win against SV Wehen Wiesbaden , when he came on for Justin Eilers in the 84th minute . After Dresden's promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga, the captain, who was substituted on in the 70th minute, prepared the 1-1 equalizer against 1. FC Nürnberg on the first match day of the 2016/17 season on August 6, 2016 in stoppage time . Hauptmann scored two goals in the 2016/17 season. In the 2017/18 season he made 25 second division appearances for the Dresden club, where he prepared two goals.

In mid-May 2018, the interest of 1. FC Köln , the club where father Ralf had already played, in Niklas Hauptmann became known. On May 23, 2018, the relegated Bundesliga announced that they would sign Hauptmann for the 2018/19 season . The transfer fee is said to have been 3.4 million euros, double the amount agreed in his contract as an exit clause. It was the largest transfer fee that Dynamo Dresden had ever received for a player. He made his debut for Cologne on August 4, 2018, on the first matchday of the 2018/19 season , in the game against VfL Bochum . As a result, the midfielder was occasionally used, but could never recommend himself as a regular player. Between February and April 2019, he fell out due to knee surgery. After returning to the Bundesliga as champions, neither Achim Beierlorzer nor his successor Markus Gisdol found use for Hauptmann, who instead played five times in attacking midfield for the regional league team and was able to score a goal for them.

The second division season 2020/21 is captain on loan at Holstein Kiel spend.
