The Bolgatanga Municipal District in the central north of Ghana is one of the nine districts of the Upper East Region of the republic and its capital. The only city and main town is the city of Bolgatanga . 131,550 people live in the district, almost half of them in the city. Almost half (47.7%) of the population are younger than 15 years.

Ethnic structure and religion

Most of the residents of the district belong to different Gur- speaking peoples of northern Afghanistan. The city of Bolgatanga, however, has a cosmopolitan character. Not only do different peoples from the north mix here, but also members of the large ethnic groups of southern Afghanistan, i.e. the Akan , Ewe and Ga .

Almost half of the residents (49.7%) are Christians , 35% are followers of traditional religions and 13.2% are Muslims .

Climate and vegetation

The climate is tropical with a wet season from May to October and a long dry season with practically no rainfall from October to April. Temperatures range between a maximum of 45 ° in March / April and a minimum of 12 ° in December.

The district's natural vegetation consists of tree savannah , with baobab , shea nut and acacia trees . The lower vegetation is burned by fire during the dry season or dried out by the sun.

economy

A large part of the population over 15 years of age (37.8%) lives from agriculture, despite the urban structure of the district, 18.3% from manufacturing, mainly handicrafts, and about 15% are employed in trade; 5.5% work in the education sector, there are also some jobs in the mining (0.5%) and construction (3.3%) sectors.

There is a light industry in the form of some metalworking companies, repair shops, painting companies, etc., which, however, rarely employ more than five people.
