Bomb Jack is a 1984 arcade game developed by Tehkan . This non- scrolling platform game is about touching bombs scattered around the field and thereby defusing them.

The levels each have one of five different background graphics. The motifs are the Chephren pyramid and the Sphinx , the Acropolis , Neuschwanstein Castle , a Miami- like coastal city and a street view that is not clearly visible at night.

The player controls the superhero Jack and tries to defuse bombs left in these places. If all bombs are touched in a certain order, the player receives bonus points. Various opponents move across the field, which draw a so-called 'life' from the player when they are touched . The correct sequence, which leads to bonus points, is as follows: After the first bomb has been defused, one of the others has a fuse. It indicates that this bomb is the next. After it has been disarmed, the fuse will burn on the next one and so on. If all bombs are defused in the correct order, you will receive 50,000 bonus points. If a bomb is defused in the wrong order, there is a bonus of 30,000 points. If two bombs are defused incorrectly in the sequence, there is still a bonus of 20,000 points, and if there are three, another 10,000. If more than 3 bombs are defused incorrectly in the sequence, there is no longer any bonus. The bonus is also reduced one level if you lose a life.

In the game, letters can be collected that give the player extras: A B for bonus points, E for an extra life, S for a free game (only in the machine version) and a P , which turns the opponent into collectable coins for a few seconds. The sequence for a won free game ( S ) contains text that contains a typo. Instead of "YOU ARE LUCKY", the text "YOU ARE LUCY" is displayed.

A "B" occurs a maximum of 5 times per level. In the top center of the screen you can see how many "B" s you have already collected. All points earned are doubled with 2 "B" s. At 3 "B" s they triple, at 4 "B" s they quadruple. The maximum number of points earned can be increased fivefold (with five "B" s). The Powerball "P" constantly changes its color. Depending on which color you catch him on, there are more or fewer points. The fewest points are awarded when it is blue (100 points). If it's gray, you get 2,000 points. If you have already collected all 5 "B" s, a gray-colored Powerball "P" gives a whopping 10,000 points! a "P" can appear 1 to 3 times per round. A bar in the top center of the screen (which shows the number of "B" s already collected) shows when the next Powerball will appear. If you collect all the bombs in the correct order, the bar rises faster and the Powerball comes earlier.

The game consists of 99 levels, each of which is referred to here as "rounds". After level 99, Bomb Jack starts again at level 0, whereby the individual levels are repeated much earlier. Thus the game only stops when you have lost all lives. Round 56 shows exactly the same round picture as round 1, but the level of difficulty is considerably higher. From round 40 the game border bars as well as the bars in the game appear in new color combinations.

The game is one of the classics in the computer game scene today. In the course of time it has been converted to various platforms, including a. on Commodore 64 (distributed by Elite), Game Boy and on the PC. There are now numerous versions that can be played in a web browser or on a mobile phone.

Successors were developed with Mighty Bomb Jack (1986), Bomb Jack II (1986) and Bomb Jack Twin (1993).

Ports

Bomb Jack has been ported to various computer systems. A Java ME version was released in 2003.
