General

In autumn 2013, Wiener Linien put the procurement of the next generation of vehicles out to tender. At the end of 2014, the order for 119 units of the Bombardier Flexity was announced. The delivery is to take place in the years 2018 to 2026. The order, with an order volume of 562 million euros, also includes a maintenance contract and an option for a further 37 units. The award was preceded by an unsuccessful complaint by the losing company Siemens against the decision at the Vienna Administrative Court. Internally, the Flexity Vienna series bears the type designation "D".

construction

The trams based on the Adtranz Incentro are delivered in a uniform length of 34 m and with six double doors have one less than the long version of the ULF type last purchased . In order to guarantee boarding at ground level, the entry height of the 211-person tram is 215 millimeters.

business

The trams manufactured in the Vienna plant have been delivered to Wiener Linien since the end of 2017 and the first train was on route 67 from the Favoriten depot between December 2018 and August 2019. All five trains have been in service on Line 6 since September 2019. According to the original plan, 16 vehicles should have been in operation by the end of 2019, seven had actually been delivered and six in operation.

From March 1, 2020, all Flexity trams were shut down. The reason given by Wiener Linien was "irregularities in the drives". After improvements by Bombardier, 3 of the 7 Flexitys delivered at that time were already on the network 6 days after the shutdown.

Test deployment in Graz

On October 15, 2019, Flexity 306 was transported to Graz for test drives in the Graz Linien network . On the basis of these and other test drives with Munich's Avenios , the next generation of vehicles for the Graz tram will be tendered . For this purpose, the Bombardier vehicle was covered with green foils and the slogans "I man i tram - a neicha Cityrunner fia Graz" and "From Austria for Austria".
