Christmas 2000 bombings in Indonesia

The Christmas 2000 bombings in Indonesia were a series of attacks on churches on December 24, 2000 and part of a terrorist campaign by the Jemaah Islamiyah group , affiliated with al-Qaeda . In the coordinated bomb attacks on churches in Jakarta and eight other cities, 18 people were killed and many injured. The locations and victims of the bombings:

  • Jakarta: Bomb attacks on five Catholic and Protestant churches, including the Roman Catholic cathedral, killing at least three
  • Pekanbaru : Four police officers and one civilian were killed while trying to defuse a bomb.
  • Medan : explosions near churches
  • Bandung : Bomb attack on Christian house, two dead
  • Batam : Three bombings, 22 injured
  • Mojokerto : Bomb attacks on three churches, one dead
  • Mataram : Bomb attacks on three churches
  • Sukabumi : Bombings, three dead

Two suspects were arrested after the attacks. Indonesian police say they have found documents showing a link between the attacks and Riduan Isamuddin Hambali . Preacher Abu Bakar Bashir was charged with involvement in the 2003 bombings but found not guilty. He was subsequently convicted of his involvement in the 2002 Bali bombing . In 2012, a court sentenced Umar Patek , who manufactured the bombs on orders from Hambali, to 20 years in prison for aiding and abetting the attacks of 2000 and 2002.
