The Lichuan fire-bellied toad ( Bombina lichuanensis ) belongs to the " primitive " family Bombinatoridae and to the genus of toads within the order of the frogs . It was first described in 1994 from the Chinese Beiyang in the Hubei province and from the neighboring Sichuan . The species was originally regarded as a color variant of the giant toad ( Bombina maxima ), which it is very similar to, except for a different color of the abdomen. Molecular biological investigations support the classification as a separate species.

The species inhabits bogs at an altitude of around 1800 meters and needs pools for reproduction. Due to the small distribution area, the species is listed as endangered ( Vulnerable ) on the IUCN Red List .
