The von Bondeli family is a Bernese patrician family that has owned the city of Bern as a citizen since 1543 and belongs to the Pfistern Society .

history

The family is based around Bern in the 15th century. Throughout the 16th century, the name Bondeli, Puntely, Bundely etc. appears in the baptismal and marriage registers of Nidau and in many other documents from the nearby port . During this time, members of the family came to Bern and were included in the civil law there. The first officially known owner of the Bernese civic rights was Erhard Bundely, Pfister (baker) and landlord in the White Cross , who appeared from 1542 to 1557 as a member of the Grand Council and in 1556 as a chamberlain at Pfistern . His first marriage was to Verena Armbruster and his second marriage to Dorothea Schwinghard. From this second marriage he left behind several daughters, probably also a son Johann (Hans), also Pfister, member of the Grand Council in 1568 and died in 1577. The lineage is not entirely certain, because according to the Easter Book of 1568, Hans Bondeli had to be a new member of the Grand Council pay a fee of eight pounds, while everyone else whose fathers were already members of this body had to pay only seven pounds. On the other hand, it is clear from the council manuals of 1571 that Hans Bundely's mother Dorothea Bundely was the landlady of the White Cross .

The rest of the line can be traced back to this Hans Bundely. Johann (Hans) Bundely married Margaretha Hartmann in 1559. Her son Erhard Bondeli was baptized on June 21, 1561, a member of the Grand Council in 1599 and died in 1604. Erhard gave up the family's trade and made a fortune as an officer in Hungary. Married twice, his second marriage to Elisabeth Walthard was a son named Jakob Bondeli, born on July 17, 1597, Lieutenant in the Swiss regiment of Mülinen. Jakob took part in the campaign against the Spaniards in Valtellina in 1620. His regiment was attacked by 12,000 Spaniards near Tirano and completely wiped out. "With Captain Binder I sampt seven got away. What Spain's sword doesn't do, the plague has done," says his portrait. Jakob Bondeli died of the plague in Bern in 1628 . His 1618 closed with Magdalena Amport marriage came from Samuel Bondeli, born on 23 March 1626 since 1651 Member of the Great Council, and since 1672 a member of the Small Council of Bern, where he the office of Seckelmeisters held. In 1662 Samuel was bailiff in Wangen and in 1680 bailiff in Lausanne . Samuel left four sons from his marriage to Anna Catharina Wild: Simeon, Gabriel, Emanuel and Johann Erhard.

The family's coat of arms shows a whitefish ( French Bondelle ).

Prussian line

Simeon and Emanuel Bondeli entered service in Brandenburg . Both were chamberlains at the court in Berlin . Together with his brother Emanuel, Simeon played a key role in realizing the Prussian hereditary claims to the Principality of Neuchâtel as court and legation councilor, later as ambassador and special representative . In 1703 the Bondeli brothers were raised to the nobility by the Prussian king as barons . After a long diplomatic activity in Berlin and at various European courts, Simeon von Bondeli returned to Bern in 1709. From 1707 to 1723 the council gave him the benefice of a monastery conductor . He died in 1734 at the age of 76. Gabriel von Bondeli died young and unmarried. Johann Erhard von Bondeli also went to Prussia and founded a Prussian line of the family there. He married Veronika von Flanß , became the commandant of Pillau and died in 1714. His son Friedrich Julius, Oberamtmann zu Memel and Tapiau, married Charlotte Albertine von der Groeben in 1734 . From this marriage comes a son Friedrich Albrecht, lieutenant and later captain in the Dohna and Syburg regiments. Friedrich Albrecht died unmarried in 1783. With him the Prussian line died out.
