The Boppard candytuft ( Iberis linifolia subsp. Boppardensis ) is a subspecies of the mean candytuft ( Iberis linifolia ) within the cruciferous family (Brassicaceae). It is one of the few endemic plants in Rhineland-Palatinate in southwestern Germany . Their occurrence is limited to the Bopparder Hamm area, a famous wine-growing area.

The Boppard candytuft grows to a height of between 30 and 60 centimeters. Its habitus resembles Iberis umbellata , but some of its leaves have one or two teeth on both sides. The petals are light pink to pale white. The fruit cluster is initially short and lengthened as it ripens. The pods are between six and eight millimeters long, obovate to rounded and wingless at the bottom. The stylus is one to 1.5 millimeters long and rarely protrudes.

It has the number of chromosomes 2n = 22.

Systematics

It was first described as Iberis boppardensis by Jordan in 1847. In 1981 it was placed as a subspecies of Iberis intermedia . Because of the only minor differences to the nominate form of Iberis linifolia , it has been classified as its subspecies since 1998.

Occurrence

The Boppard candytuft has its only occurrence on sites rich in rock rubble near Boppard on the Rhine . There, in a wide bend in the Rhine, there is a xerothermal local climate in the south-facing vineyards ; the Hunsrück shields damp and cool west winds and the slate floors reflect the sun's rays. It thrives there in the Rumicetum scutati from the Stipion calamagrostidis association.

Due to the fact that the Boppard candytuft is limited to the Boppard area, the region has a special responsibility for the protection of this species. The subspecies is endangered at its few growth places on slate rubble on steep slopes of the Rhine below Boppard through bush encroachment. On stony fallow vineyards downstream from Boppard there is another occurrence of the Boppard candytuft, where the plant appears to be less threatened. It is included in Category 2 of the Red List.
