life and work

Boris von Brauchitsch grew up as the son of the photographers Helga and Victor von Brauchitsch in Frankfurt am Main and dealt with photography from an early age. After studying art history, archeology and history in Frankfurt, Bonn and Berlin (Free University) from 1983 to 1988, he was in 1991 with a thesis on the photographer Herbert List in the field of photographic history doctorate.

Since 1992 he has worked as a curator of exhibitions and events of contemporary art, among others at the institutions Kunstmuseum Bonn , Universität Hamburg , Museum für Moderne Kunst Frankfurt, Kunstverein Morsbroich Leverkusen, Historisches Museum Frankfurt , Bavarian State Opera and New Society for Fine Arts Berlin (NGBK ). From 1992 to 1993 he was director of the Galerie der Künstler in Frankfurt am Main and from 1995 to 1997 founding director and director of the Kunsthaus Kaufbeuren .

He is also an author u. a. emerged with publications on various focuses, especially in the field of photography history. He has also written a number of artist biographies and edited various illustrated books on the history of Berlin. Occasionally he also publishes as a freelance journalist.

In his writings on art theory, von Brauchitsch repeatedly deals with the mechanisms involved in the creation and exploitation of art. In doing so, he also crosses the boundaries between non-fiction and performance, between real sources and fictional artist biographies, between essay and drama.

As a photographer, he mainly devotes himself to landscapes and city details, which he often presents in reduced, sometimes surreal tableaus. In his long-term project "Social Plastic", he records social phenomena that materialize in plastic. With the "9" series, he advocates a radical reduction in image production: at every new location the photographer visits, only nine photographs are created to condense a first impression.

Boris von Brauchitsch lives in Berlin and Las Palmas.

Quote

“Boris von Brauchitsch is a photographer, art historian and curator. As the author of numerous artist monographs, of publications on the history of photography, but also as a fiction writer and even as the author of a play on the history of the documenta, he is a great narrator. Both aspects, the pre-informed gaze of the art historian, who can summon a multitude of images for every object envisaged, as well as the very pronounced narrative concern of the writer, shape his photographic work in a decisive way. With a gaze trained in this way and sharpened by ironic awareness, he succeeds in making complex narratives of great poetry recognizable in seemingly succinct stories. "
