Life

Andreas Fux (2005)

Andreas Fux grew up as a citizen of the GDR in East Berlin. 1980–1982 he trained as an electrician and since 1983 he approached photographic work on an autodidactic basis. In 1988 his first photographic works were published in Das Magazin , a monthly issue in East Berlin with a focus on culture and lifestyle. A year later he worked as a freelancer for the magazine. For Das Magazin , Fux provided photographic contributions from the East German punk and youth scene, which was initially defined by clothing and fashionable improvisation. In 1989 he worked on photo productions for DEFA documentaries. Since 1990 Andreas Fux has been working as a freelance photographer for various newspapers and magazines and has dedicated himself to his own artistic projects. Fux belongs to the Prenzlauerberg photo artist scene whose work documented the last decade of the GDR, the transition and the transition to the FRG, and is their most prominent representative alongside Sven Marquart , with whom he has been friends since 1984.

In 1992 he published his first own publication entitled The Russians are coming to accompany the exhibition of the same name in the Janssen Photo Gallery in Berlin as well as in Hamburg and Munich. Andreas Fux became known to a broader audience through the photo series Die süße Haut (1995–2005), a series of portraits with a focus on tattoos and scratches, in which he sometimes accompanied his models for years and again and again for mostly nocturnal shootings in the neutrally illuminated white room of his studio. He has also taken up the subject of nudes, body culture and sexuality again in more recent works, for example in the series At the End of the Night , in which a black background is used and the play with the now selective light seems to sculpturally model and fragment the models.

Andreas Fux lives and works in Berlin.

Horizons, September 11, 2001

The series Horizonte (2001) is formally reminiscent of Hiroshi Sugimoto's Seascapes . In addition to the stringency of the composition, what both series have in common is the resumption of the sunrise and sunset subjects; the sunrise and sunset in Praiano by Sol LeWitt are also used as a reference for both . The images were received as an expression of calm and innocence that is more than the supposed harmony of nature.

Andreas Fux, from the series "The Sweet Skin"

An initial fashion project turned into the most famous series of photos by Andreas Fux, Die süße Haut (2005). The portrait of the tattoo , branding and piercing scene in Berlin has been described as one of the most disturbing, but also most erotic photo books of the first decade of the 2000s . In front of a mostly white background and in the quiet of the photo studio, nude photographs were taken, in which the contrast between the intimacy of the body and the clinical sterility of the room was taken to extremes.

Andreas Fux, from the series "Kerberos and Chimaira"

In a wind tunnel in Berlin-Adlershof , Fux staged the motifs from the Kerberos and Chimaira series (2010). Through the strict compositions in the expressionist habitus and using the aesthetic codes of the latex and fetish scene , he points to a dangerous and nowadays often unreflected closeness between the erotic image codes of fetishism and the aesthetics of National Socialism .

Since 2010, Andreas Fux has been increasingly combining various aspects of his work in exhibitions in order to make cross-time connections visible. The illustrated book Fux is a preliminary inventory of his work . Tracks (2014) .
