The Borkum-Riffgrund is a nature reserve in the area of ​​the German exclusive economic zone in the North Sea .

The nature reserve is around 625 km². It is congruent with the FFH area of the same name that was designated in 2007 . The area has been under nature protection since September 28, 2017.

The nature reserve is located northwest of Borkum and Juist in the southwest of the German exclusive economic zone. It is bounded to the west by the demarcation of the German exclusive economic zone and to the south by the seaward border of the German territorial sea . The traffic separation area "Terschelling-German Bight" crosses the nature reserve in the south.

The area is protected by a flooded sandbank and adjacent areas. The approximately 521 km² large sandbank emerged from a ground moraine from the Saale glaciation. It is water depths of 18 to 33 meters. Around 23 km² of the protected area is occupied by reefs .

Winter in the area and a. Black- throated diver , red-throated diver , common gull , black-backed gull , kittiwake , little gull , northern gannet and guillemot . River , coastal and sandwich tern and gull are detected as migrating birds. The sea area is the habitat of gray seals , harbor seals and porpoises .

Recreational fishing is prohibited in the nature reserve. To the north and northeast of the nature reserve there are several offshore wind farms or are planned, including the offshore wind farm Borkum Riffgrund .
