very high reservoir

The Bortelsee , also Bortelseewji on the national map , is a reservoir near the Bortelhorn near Brig, which is at an altitude of 2463  m above sea level. M. is located. It is one of the highest reservoirs in Switzerland designed for energy generation . The reservoir is used by EnBAG as the head storage facility for the two-stage Bortel power plant, after which the water is processed by the Silliboden power plant before it flows into the Rhone. The rock dam to dam the 1.7 million m³ lake was built in 1988 and 1989 . The construction time was one and a half years. After the floods in 1993 and 1994, adjustments to the flood relief had to be made in 2000. In 2005 the air-side embankment had to be enlarged in order to comply with the guidelines of the Federal Office for Water and Geology.

The water in the lake mainly comes from the precipitation and the snowmelt in spring and summer, some of it is also pumped into the lake with the pumping system in the Bortelalp headquarters. The stored water is mainly used during the winter months to generate peak energy . One cubic meter of water from the lake can generate 3.5 kWh, which is one of the highest energy equivalents in Switzerland.
