Franz Stumpf (born July 16, 1912 in Mainz , † September 2, 1974 in Halle (Saale) ) was a German opera singer ( bass baritone ). He sang mainly in the role of the hero baritone .

Franz Stumpf discovered his love for music as a child and sang in the church choir of Mainz Cathedral for many years . After finishing school he learned the trade of a blacksmith. He won first prize in a singing competition. The donor of the award made it possible for him to study singing in Frankfurt am Main. After graduating, he had his first engagement in the 1935/36 season at the Stadttheater Mainz . His first role was the King's Heerrufer in the opera Lohengrin by Richard Wagner .

In 1936 he was appointed general manager Hanns Schulz-Dornburg (1890–1950) at the Kiel City Theater (then: “United Municipal Theaters in Kiel”) as “2. Bass, 2nd baritone ”. There, at the age of 25, he was given the opportunity to play one of the great roles in his vocal field and successfully embodied the title role in Boris Godunov by Modest Mussorgsky . In Kiel he also appeared as a concert singer and took over a. a. the bass parts in The Creation and in the Verdi Requiem .

In 1938 he went to the Berlin Volksoper , of which he remained a member until all theaters were closed due to the war in the summer of 1944, and during this time he took part in the Mozart Festival. After the Second World War , he moved to the Berlin State Opera with the resumption of performance at the end of 1945 . In December 1946 he worked there in the role of Iwan in the world premiere of the opera Postmeister Wyrin von Florizel von Reuter . At the Berlin State Opera he sang the sea king in 1947 under the musical direction of Johannes Schüler in the German premiere of the opera Sadko by Nikolai Rimski-Korsakow . As a permanent member of the ensemble of the Berlin State Opera, he also took on numerous small and medium-sized roles, including a. the Dottore Bombasto in Arlecchino by Ferruccio Busoni , Tommaso in Tiefland , the uncle Bonze in Madame Butterfly and Doctor Grenvil in La Traviata . He also sang the village judge in Jenůfa (new production in the 1948/49 season, with Christel Goltz in the title role) and the Second Knight of the Grail in Parsifal at the Berlin State Opera .

After a two-year engagement from 1950 at the Schwerin State Theater , he came to the State Theater Halle in 1952 , where he was engaged until the 1960s.

As a guest he took on appearances at the Berlin State Opera (including in March / April 1960 in The Condemnation of Lucullus ), at the Städtische Oper Berlin (as Mozart's Figaro), at the Leipzig Opera House , the Frankfurt Opera and at other opera houses. In Halle he played several great roles. In the 1959/60 season he sang again the title role in Boris Godunow at the Landestheater Halle . He also regularly took part in the Handel Festival in Halle . In 1959 he sang the role of Timagene in the opera Poros at the Handel Festival . In the 1965/66 season he sang Polyphemus in Acis and Galatea in a production of the Landestheater Halle, which premiered on the chamber stage of the “ Theater of the Young Guard ”.

For his role in the Handel Festival in 1957 he received the collective (so-called. "Collective of Handel Festival") the National Prize . He also received the art award of the city of Halle. In 1957 he was appointed chamber singer . For health reasons he was forced to end his career in 1968.

Stumpf mainly represented the role of the hero baritone on stage. In particular, he sang the great baritone roles in the operas of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart , Giuseppe Verdi and Richard Wagner .

His repertoire included Figaro in The Marriage of Figaro , the title role in Don Giovanni , Don Pizarro in Fidelio , Simone Boccanegra , Amonasro , Jago and, in the Wagner class, the Dutch , Friedrich von Telramund , Kurwenal and Hans Sachs .

However, he also sang numerous "classic" bass roles. In the bass field he performed a. a. as Sarastro ( Die Zauberflöte ; at the Berlin State Opera with Peter Anders als Tamino), Rocco ( Fidelio ), Kaspar ( Der Freischütz ), Sparafucile ( Rigoletto , among others at the Berlin State Opera), Ramphis ( Aida ), Daland ( The Flying Dutchman ) , König Marke ( Tristan and Isolde ) and Veit Pogner ( Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg ). He also took on bass roles in operas by Friedrich von Flotow , Otto Nicolai and Hermann Goetz .

He also sang the title roles in Boris Godunow , Prince Igor and Enoch Arden . Other roles by Stumpf were Scarpia in Tosca and at the annual Handel Festival in Halle a. a. Phoenix (Fenice) in Deidamia (1953) and the Emperor Valentinian III. in Ezio (1954).
