The Boston Beer Company is an American brewery founded in 1985 by Jim Koch in Boston . Their brand of beer is called Samuel Adams (often abbreviated as "Sam Adams"), after Samuel Adams , who owned a brewery, but is mainly known for his role in the American Revolutionary War . The bottle labels show Adams 'follower Paul Revere , allegedly because of Adams' bad looks. It is the largest US-owned brewery.
history
The Samuel Adams beer brand was originally created with a lager . The original recipe was developed in St. Louis in 1860 by Louis Koch, who sold the beer under the name "Louis Koch Lager" until Prohibition and then again until the early 1950s.
In 1985, the recipe was changed by Louis Koch's great-great-grandson, Jim Koch, with the help of Joseph Owades , the man who is credited with inventing diet beer in 1970. In April the beer was re-introduced as the Samuel Adams Boston Lager . Three months later, it was voted the best beer among 93 US beer brands at the Great American Beer Festival . Since then, production has grown steadily to 7.3 million liters in 1989 and over 159 million liters today. In 1997 the Hudepohl Schoenling Brewery in Cincinnati was taken over. Another takeover followed in 2008: Diageo bought a brewery in Pennsylvania . This brewery was built in 1972 by the F. & M. Schaefer Brewing Company .
