The Krefeld Botanical Garden is located on the edge of the Schönwasser Park in the Krefeld district of Oppum . As early as 1928, the botanical garden developed from a small school garden. On an area of 3.6 hectares, around 5000 plant species grow here in scientific departments and themed gardens (as of 2008). Admission is usually free.

Areas

In addition to local flora, visitors will find rare cacti , carnivorous plants, orchids , medicinal herbs , marsh and water plants, among other things . There is also a rose garden, an alpinum and a cottage garden .

Cacti

The cacti are housed in a large greenhouse, which is open to the public on the first Sunday of each month from May to October. On these days, the members of the Krefeld cactus friends , who have provided the majority of the plants from their own stocks, are available to visitors for questions about cacti and succulents .

Lower Rhine cottage garden

This garden area is managed as a school garden . School classes and working groups from the nearby Schmiedestrasse secondary school come every week and work on the beds.

Around 100 plants, sorted according to their areas of application, are planted in this themed garden. Signs provide information about the names, origins and ingredients of each plant species. Information boards provide information about the history of herbal medicine and the importance of the correct dosage for the medicinal effect.
