Krefeld Botanical Garden
The Krefeld Botanical Garden is located on the edge of the Schönwasser Park in the Krefeld district of Oppum . As early as 1928, the botanical garden developed from a small school garden. On an area of 3.6 hectares, around 5000 plant species grow here in scientific departments and themed gardens (as of 2008). Admission is usually free.
In addition to local flora, visitors will find rare cacti , carnivorous plants, orchids , medicinal herbs , marsh and water plants, among other things . There is also a rose garden, an alpinum and a cottage garden .
The cacti are housed in a large greenhouse, which is open to the public on the first Sunday of each month from May to October. On these days, the members of the Krefeld cactus friends , who have provided the majority of the plants from their own stocks, are available to visitors for questions about cacti and succulents .
Lower Rhine cottage garden
The aim of this area is to bring visitors closer to the topic of " Phytotherapy - sensible herbal medicine" and to show a selection of medicinal plants that are contained in teas and ready-to-use preparations. Around 100 plants, sorted according to their areas of application, are planted in this themed garden. Signs provide information about the names, origins and ingredients of each plant species. Information boards provide information about the history of herbal medicine and the importance of the correct dosage for the medicinal effect. In addition, a selection of poisonous plants is presented.
There are around 3,000 climbing, shrub, bed and hybrid tea roses. A small wooden bridge leads to the rhododendron area.
Art of Eden
The art and design exhibition Art of Eden takes place every year on the first Saturday and Sunday in May . This event, which is also held in Darmstadt , is intended to provide a forum for art and design in nature. The domestic and foreign designers and artists are personally present and available for questions and discussions. The exhibits integrated into the extensive landscape of the botanical garden are also offered for sale.
