The Botanical Garden and the Greifswald Arboretum are maintained by the University of Greifswald . The botanical garden is to the west of the train station and the historic city center, the arboretum is about two kilometers southeast of the center of Greifswald , near Berthold-Beitz-Platz.

history

In 1763 a medicinal plant garden was laid out between today's main university building and the ramparts . Since the gardens were not only home to plants for medicinal use, the site was renamed from hortus medicus to hortus academicus , which emphasized the scientific use by botany.

In the course of the 19th century, the university campus in the southern city center was greatly expanded, so that the botanical garden was increasingly narrowed. According to plans by Julius Münter , a new garden with greenhouses was completed in 1886 at the current location of the Botanical Garden in Fettenvorstadt on a two-hectare area.

Due to its size, the newly designed botanical garden did not offer any space for woody stock, so that a second location for woody stock, the arboretum, was established in 1934 on Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn-Straße. Plans to merge the two locations on the area of the arboretum were not realized, so that to this day both locations exist spatially separate from each other.

Greenhouse plant

The historic, listed greenhouses from 1885 are located on Münterstraße. Above all, the palm greenhouse with its warm and cold house is of particular national importance as an individual monument, also due to its rarity. At the beginning of 2014 it had to be closed to the public for security reasons. Due to the warm and humid climate in the rooms, the load-bearing elements of the glazing and the steel supporting structure are partly badly rotten. For the renovation, for which around 3.5 million euros are set, donations will be collected through crowdfunding, among other things. The renovation began in June 2019 and is expected to last until the end of 2020.

The greenhouse facility is used by the Institute for Botany and Landscape Ecology at the University of Greifswald primarily for research projects, for example in the field of experimental plant ecology.
