Ban Boten (short Boten , also Botèn or Botene ) is a village in the Namtha district in the Luang Namtha province in Laos . The place has about 2500 inhabitants and is located at an altitude of 1029 meters above sea level.
It is important as the main border crossing from Laos to China ; on the other side of the border is Mohan Township in Mengla County in Yunnan . Neighboring places in Laos are Bopiat and Ban Tintôk , the next largest city is the provincial capital Luang Namtha, about 60 km away .
National Road 13 , the most important road in the country, which runs to the Cambodian border, begins in Boten . The Laotian section of the Kunming-Bangkok Expressway , an expressway connection from southern China to the Thai border at Ban Houayxay, also begins in Boten .
Like much of northern Laos, the place is heavily influenced by Chinese; Boten itself is visited by many Chinese with a day visa , as cheap goods imported from Thailand are sold there. The place has a guest house and several small shops and places to eat; Buses and trucks run daily to Luang Namtha and Mengla. The Lao-Chinese border will be closed overnight.
