A Carolingian royal court in Großhelfendorf has been documented as early as 885 . In 1818 the community of Helfendorf was established, which was called Großhelfendorf until 1875 . On May 1, 1978, Helfendorf and Peiß merged as part of the municipal area reform to form the new unified municipality of Aying. Aying received the Helfendorfer coat of arms, which has been used since 1971.
