Botha Sigcau

Botha Manzolwandle Jongilizwe Sigcau (* 1913 ; † December 1, 1978 in Umtata ) was the traditional Paramount chief of East Pondoland and from 1976 to 1978 the first president of the Transkei homeland . He belonged to the amaPondo, who belong to the Xhosa people .

Life

His daughter was the politician Stella Sigcau , his sons were Mpondombini Sigcau and Ntsikayezwe Sigcau.

Botha Sigcau was a graduate of Fort Hare University . He was a member of the Transkei National Independence Party .

In 1939, the government of Barry Hertzog Botha Sigcau appointed as the successor to his older, late half-brother Inkosi Enkhulu Mandlonke Sigcau as Paramount Chief, with Botha's older brother Nelson Sigcau being passed over in the line of succession. Botha Sigcau received this post from the apartheid Authoritative Body Regional Tribal Authority . In addition to the bypassed succession, this led to conflicts.

Sigcau was an early advocate of a Bantu authority in Transkei, which was in line with and promoted by the apartheid regime . Therefore, he was appointed chairman of the Transkei Territorial Authority .

He died of a heart attack .
