Stella Sigcau
Stella Margaret Nomzamo Sigcau (born January 4, 1937 in Lusikisiki , South Africa , † May 7, 2006 in Durban ) was a South African politician .
biography
Stella Sigcau was a daughter of the President of Transkei , Botha Sigcau, who died in 1978 . She began her political career in 1968 with the election to the parliament of the then South African homeland Transkei, in which she represented the constituency of Lusisikiki as a member of the Transkei National Independence Party (TNIP) .
After her release to sovereignty on October 26, 1976 as part of South African apartheid policy , she became Minister of the Interior in her father's government. Between 1977 and 1990 she was chairman of the TNIP, which won 74 seats out of 75 seats in parliament in the 1981 elections. In 1987 she became Prime Minister , but after only three months, together with President George Matanzima , she was overthrown in a coup by the Army Commander, General Bantu Holomisa . In 1990 she dissolved the TNIP. In the 1980s she received from the South African entrepreneur Sol Kerzner a bribe in the amount of 50,000 US dollars .
After the end of apartheid and the reintegration of Transkei in South Africa as part of the province of Eastern Cape , it was after the first free elections in April 1994 by President Nelson Mandela to the Minister of Public Enterprises ( Minister of Public Enterprises ) in the Cabinet appointed. Stella Sigcau was also a member of the African National Congress (ANC).
Thabo Mbeki , Mandela's successor as President, appointed her Minister for Public Works in 1999. She held this office until her death.
