history

Lusikisiki emerged from a military base established in 1894. There has been an administration there since 1932. The name is onomatopoeic and denotes the rustling of reeds in the wind.

Lusikisiki was the capital of Pondoland and one of the seats of the AmaMpondo kingdom. King Faku, founder of the modern AmaMpondo kingdom, was born there. In 1830 he set up the first mission station in Pondoland. On June 6, 1960, eleven residents were killed by government officials in the Ngquza Hill massacre. Subsequently, Lusikisiki was a center of resistance against apartheid , which was led there by the Non European Unity Movement . In 1963, despite resistance, the area became part of the Transkei , which was reintegrated into South Africa in 1994. At Lusikisiki, guerrillas of the Lesotho Liberation Army were trained by the US mercenary Robert MacKenzie for terrorist attacks in Lesotho in the 1980s .
