Botryobasidium asterosporum is a mushroom species from the family of grape basidia relatives (Botryobasidiaceae). No anamorph of the species is known.

features

Macroscopic features

Botryobasidium asterosporum has white to light ocher, spider-like and thin fruiting bodies, which grow resupinate ( i.e. completely adjacent) on their substrate and appear slightly net-like under the magnifying glass.

Microscopic features

As with all grape basidia , the hyphae structure of Botryobasidium asterosporum is monomitic, i.e. it consists exclusively of generative hyphae that branch out at right angles. The basal hyphae are yellowish, usually 10  µm wide, thick-walled and not encrusted. The 5–9 µm thick subhymenial hyphae are also yellowish and thin-walled. Like almost all grape basidia, the species does not have cystides , but has buckles on most of the septa. The four-pore basidia of the species grow in nests, are 20-25 × 8-10 µm in size and subcylindrical. The spores are spherical to almost spherical and mostly 4–6 × 4–5 µm in size. They are yellowish, covered with spines up to 5 µm long and have thin walls.

distribution

The known distribution area of Botryobasidium asterosporum only includes Taiwan .

ecology

Botryobasidium asterosporum is a saprobiont that grows on the rotten dead wood of Formosa firs ( Abies kawakamii ). The species was found in mixed forests with the Chinese hemlock ( Tsuga chinensis ).
