Boualem Bouguetaia

Boualem Bouguetaia (born September 21, 1946 in Oued Rhiou ) is an Algerian lawyer and politician . Since 2008 he has been a judge at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea .

Life

Bouguetaia studied law at the Sorbonne and completed his studies in 1973 with a master's degree in international law . After completing a degree in economics and finance at the Institut d'études politiques de Paris , he received his doctorate in law in 1979 .

From 1972 to 1975, Bouguetaia worked as a research assistant in the Algerian embassy in Paris before moving to his country's Ministry of Defense as a consultant .

In 1987 he was elected to the Algerian National Assembly, where he was a member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and the Finance Committee. In 1993 he moved to the Foreign Ministry as head of the legal department . He held this position until 2001. This was followed by stations as ambassadors in Senegal , Cape Verde , Gambia and Guinea-Bissau . Bouguetaia is still an advisor to the Algerian foreign minister today.

He has been a judge at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea in Hamburg since October 1, 2008 and its Vice-President since October 1, 2014. His term of office runs until September 30, 2017.

Awards

Bouguetaia has been the bearer of the Senegalese national order Ordre national du Lion since 2005 .
