The glacier area got its name from the Ellsworth Mountains Expedition of the University of Minnesota (1962/63). It was named after the geophysicist Glenn E. Bowie, who was a member of this expedition. The name was officially recognized by the American Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names in 1964 .
