Boy (1996) in Wuppertal

Boy is a floor sculpture by the British sculptor Tony Cragg , which is exhibited in public spaces in Wuppertal , among other places .

location

There are several versions of this sculpture. One of them is located in the so-called Barmenia Park , a small publicly accessible sculpture park at the headquarters of Barmenia Versicherung in Wuppertal. Another version belongs to the German energy supplier E.ON ; originally it was exhibited in the large glass hall of the former Düsseldorf headquarters and there after the group moved to Essen .

description

Boy is a cone-shaped sculpture that is more than 6 m long and rests on the floor. On the website of Cragg there is also a sculpture named Boy from 1996 whose shape is closely related to the Wuppertal sculpture, but not identical. On the website, the dimensions of the sculpture made of Kevlar are also given as 140 × 640 × 140 cm. These dimensions can also apply to the Wuppertal sculpture. Thanks to the Kevlar, the floor sculpture has “a rubbery, matt surface and looks not unlike a giant inflated condom.” According to another source, the material used is styrofoam .

The magazine Monopol wrote in 2011:

[...] That Cragg also masters the discipline of static grip is proven by his 'Boy', an earthy mixture of walrus, alien offspring and giant baby bottle cap, which could optionally also be passed through as a molecular chain. A thing with many faces and even more possibilities for transformation, a real Cragg creature. "

history

Barmenia acquired the sculpture from 1996 and had it installed in Barmenia Park on August 10, 1999 .

The Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg showed "during the exhibition Rudolf Steiner and Contemporary Art" in 2010, the sculpture Boy . The Duisburg Museum Küppersmühle for Modern Art also showed them in 2011 in the exhibition “Anthony Cragg - Things in Your Head”. It was the copy that E.ON was able to borrow for the exhibition.

The property formerly at E.ON in Düsseldorf was also built in 1996.
