Bröhler pond

The Bröhler Castle was a surge in the meadows of the Bröhls north of Westhemmerde , today district of Unna in Westphalia , on Bröhler pond. The ruins stood until the 18th century.

Johann Dietrich von Steinen writes in his Westphälische Geschichte from 1701: A quarter of an hour from this castle ( Haus Westhemmerde ), in a forest called the Broel, there used to be a castle that was called the 'Haus Broel' and the remains are still available. The owners were the knights, von dem Broel ', who later took on the name of Plater . When this castle fell into disrepair and the von Broel inherited the von Plater property, they built this castle in Westhemmerde in the 16th century, which came to Johan Bernd von Elspe zu Borghausen through the marriage of Mechtel Catrina von dem Broel, born Plater . The von Plater are old Westphalian knights, but have long been extinct (1135–1298 can be proven by Plater).

When Haus Bröhl was built is unknown, and one can only speculate about the previous owners. One of them could have been Gerhard von dem Broel (de Brule) , who acted as a documentary witness in 1217 when Count Gottfried von Arnsberg sold goods to the Wedinghausen monastery near Werl .
