The Malacca Strait Bridge is a proposed new bridge across the Malacca Strait between Telok Gong near Masjid Tanah , Malacca on the Malay Peninsula ( Malaysia ) and Rupat Island, and Dumai in Sumatra ( Indonesia ).

The project has been submitted to the government for approval and is expected to take ten years to complete. When completed, the 48-kilometer bridge will be the longest sea bridge in the world. The project consists of two cable bridges and a suspension bridge , both of which are the longest in the world.

Time schedule

During a visit to Germany in March 2013, Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said that building the planned bridge over the Sunda Strait would have priority. He said that four years earlier he had rejected a request from Malaysia to help build the bridge over the Malacca Strait, as building such a bridge would facilitate the exploitation of Sumatra's resources by Asia .

On October 15, 2013, the Malacca government revived the controversial 48-kilometer bridge project over the Strait of Malacca to Dumai , Indonesia, after a seven-year hiatus. The Exim Bank of China is reportedly prepared to finance 85% of the cost of the project (the US dollar is estimated at around 14 billion). The remaining financing is provided by the regional sovereign wealth funds and private investors.
