The Saratov Bridge ( Russian Саратовский мост ) crosses the Volga and connects the Russian cities of Saratov and Engels . When it opened in 1965, it was the longest bridge in Europe with a length of 2803.7 m until it was replaced by the Zeelandbrug at the end of 1965 . There is also an older railway bridge (built in 1935) and a new road bridge with a total length of almost 5 kilometers.

history

A connection between the right and left banks of the Volga and the respective settlements has been of great importance since the region was settled. The technical restrictions and the enormous width of the Volga in this area, which is several kilometers wide, made the construction of such a large bridge impossible for a long time.

Since around 1900 , the Ryazan-Ural Railway Company (Рязанско-Уральская железная дорога) has sought state funding and funds from the city of Saratov to build a railway bridge to connect its lines on both sides of the Volga. However, there was a dispute about the most favorable location for the bridge, close to the city or at the narrowest point of the Volga about 14 km downstream south of the village of Ukek (now part of the urban area). In the meantime, other variants were also considered, so that the project was repeatedly delayed.

On March 25, 1917, the Provisional Government finally confirmed the project of a two-story (rail and road) bridge near the center. But as early as July 1917, a commission found that building two bridges - a road bridge near the city and a railway bridge downstream - would be cheaper. The October Revolution and the Russian Civil War initially made implementation impossible again before, after further variants had been discussed - various tunnel variants were also proposed - the preparatory work for the construction of a downstream railway bridge finally began in 1926. The actual construction began in 1930, and on May 17, 1935 the 1700 m long bridge was opened to traffic.

The railway ferry line operated by the Ryazan Ural Railway Company since 1896 also ceased its traffic.

The bridge crosses the Volga at about its narrowest point and connects the cities of Saratov and Engels close to the center. The bridge crosses a small, undeveloped island about 1 km from the banks of Engels, which the residents of both cities use intensively as a bathing beach and recreation area in summer.

The decree on the design and construction of the bridge was signed in 1956. The planning was completed in 1958 under the direction of VM Iodzevich from the Giprotransmost Institute . In the same year, OAO "Volgomost" - Bridge No. 8 began construction work. The bridge was completed in 1965.

The 15 m wide road bridge is currently set up for three lanes. The bridge was electrified by mid-March 2004 and was served by trolleybuses on line 9 (Saratow I – Engels station, Leninplatz). Today public transport between the two cities is ensured with buses on line 284. This line connects the center of Saratow with the center of the city of Engels, coming from Saratow Central Station. On the Saratov side there is a central bus stop for the trolleybus line 1 (Saratow I – Ulitsa Chwesina station), bus lines and marshrutkas at the approach to the bridge.

In Russia, a number of prestressed concrete bridges were built in the early 1960s , the largest of which is the Saratov Bridge. The navigable part of the river in front of the Saratower bank is bridged by a 710 m long cantilever bridge with pillar spacing of 106 + 166 + 166 + 166 + 106 m. The rest of the route consists of T-beam bridges with pillar spacing of 70.2 m and 20 m. The four pillars with the cantilever arms made of prestressed concrete framework were built on land. Then the parts weighing more than 5000 t were floated into their position in the river .

New bridge

On December 16, 2000, about 15 kilometers northeast (upstream) of the old bridge near the village of Pristannoje, the first construction phase of the New Saratov Bridge was put into operation with one lane in each direction. It is part of the new extensive bypass around Saratow and Engels. The bridge piers and dams are designed for an upgrade to a four-lane motorway, which was completed in October 2009.
